On Saturday 9th August Ripon Runners Gary Bastow, Toya Bastow and Doug Tooth went to run in the events held at the Arncliffe Gala near Kettlewell. The rain came down in a familiar torrential style for this summer all day but this didn't deter the runners from the four mile road race that went down to Hawkswick village and back up the valley. Toya finished 43rd in 37. 21 and Doug 49th in 42.03. Once the road race had finished and the competitors were getting warm and dry Gary tackled the 1.5mile fell race up the steep valley side from the village green and finished 19th overall. Through the rain the Gala went on.....A great wet English day!! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
A group of Ripon Runners attended the Herriot Run 2008 which took place on 27th July. This must have been the hottest race in the Dales this year with soaring temperatures nearing the high 20's and increasing as the race went on. The ground underfoot for the most part was hard and very dry with only a short stretch over softer grassy heath. There was a very slight breeze along the upper stretches of the course but this gave little respite to the 267 competitors who completed the 14K course. For the lower lying parts of the course there was no breeze and the heat was heavy on runners. Despite the heat all the Ripon Runners enjoyed the day and managed to make the finish in good times. First home for Ripon was Paul Morgan in a time of 69.52, followed by Fred Clapham 70.03, Ray Raper 70.16, Bruce Symonds 72.20, Allan Hansen 74.18, John Grundy 87.37, Chris I’Anson 99.57.
Those not wanting an off road race headed to Harrogate for the Harrogate Town 10K. The course was just as hot and presents several hills to create a challenge for the runners. Ben Imeson was the first Ripon Runner to finish in a time of 39.52, Followed by Claire Munford 54.19, and Robert Munday 57.04
Congratulations go to Ripon Runners Ben and Anneke Imeson on the arrival of baby Neve on the 29th July weighing an impressive 8lb 8 oz.
On Sunday 27th July I ran the Cracoe fell race between Skipton and Grassington. There were 60 runners in the 2.6mile 900ft event that went from the village up and across four fields and onto the tussacky fell side and a steep drag to the monument on the summit and back. I ended up 21st and first in the v45 section. Gary Bastow ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
On Sunday a small fortunate group of Ripon Runners went to Beadnall for the start of the Northumbria Coastal run. The race had proved difficult to enter, due to its reputation as the best running event of last year in Runners World magazine, and several other Ripon Runners had failed to get in. The race did not fail to disappoint with clement weather and fantastic scenery. The race varied in terrain containing some road running, tracks and finishing with a 2 mile run along the beach to end in Alnmouth. It proved to be a great day out for runners and their families with a post race Ripon camp being set up complete with well deserved (but sandy!) barbeques and a variety of beach games, swingball for those with some energy left, boules for those who needed something more sedate!!. Dennis Connor was first home in the event with a time of 1.38.12 followed by Mike Appleton 1.40.55, Bruce Symonds 1.50.23, Karen Jones 1.55.08, Sharon Stoker 2.14.12
Sunday was also the Burton Leonard 10k race. The course presented several hilly sections and an opportunity for some fording for the brave! The weather was warm but breezy to make it ideal for a run. First Ripon Runner home was Dave Jelley in a time of 42.26 the other successful runners were; Gary Wilks 43.15, Ray Johnstone 43.17, Harvey Jones 46.12, Sean McKeag 46.36, Mathew Newstone 51.22, Andy Matheson 51.27, John Grundy 52.10, Alan Wray 53.02, Mel Dutka 57.34, Helen Pickard 61.42, Michelle Newstone 65.38, Lorraine Matheson 72.36, Monty Munson 86.52.
Ben Imson and Gary Bastow went to the Hawkswick Dash fell race near Kettlewell on Sunday to tackle the 1.2mile 690ft course that is part of the BOFRA British championship rounds. The race went from the river up a steep diagonal route to the left of the hillside with a dramatic rock scramble onto the summit then back along the edge and straight down the sheer fell to the finish. The pace was fast from the start with Ben passing Gary on the rock climb and onto the top however Gary’s experience at downhilling proved to be his strength and he finished 17th out of the 63 runners in 13.32 and Ben 25th in 14.09 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
On Sat 12th July I tried the Oakworth gala fell race nr Keighley. It was 5m and 690ft starting and finishing in the town centre. There were some cracking descents and climbs around the valleys there and had a good one in the end finishing 8th from the 44 starters. Gary. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Imeson and Orr shine at Burn Valley.Saturday 5th July saw the Black Sheep series continue with the ever ‘popular’ Burn Valley half marathon at Masham. Unusually the race was run in the rain in contrast to the usual sweltering heat which has become synonymous with the race. Although the weather may have been in the runners favour the course (known as one of the most challenging in the country) had not relented on the tough hills including Breary Banks. Many Ripon Runners put in superb times for the course with Ben Imeson finishing as first Ripon Runner male in a time of 1.31.25 and Chris Orr putting in a personal best to be first Ripon Runner lady in a time of 1.46.51. The other successful finishers were, Nick Wilson 1.34.55, Paul Morgan 1.35.09, Ray Raper 1.36.04, Gary Wilks 1.37.05, Fred Clapham 1.38.10, Kevin Jackson 1.43.02, John Ward 1.44.08, Paul Oldham 1.45.40, Lisa Quinn 1.48.25, Bruce Symonds 1.49.45, Jo Hope 1.52.17, Alan Wray 1.55.23, John Grundy 1.57.42, Helen Metcalf 2.02.12, Anna Ashfield 2.02.34, Mel Dutka 2.04.58, Fiona Prestwich 2.10.43, John Bull 2.20.20.
While others were taking on the Burn Valley, Martin Gabriel headed further North to tackle the Chevy Chase run in Northumberland. The event had rain increasing in strength but cool conditions to make running more ‘comfortable’. The 20 mile race which starts in Wooler, poses the challenge of the Cheviot Hills taking in the two highest summits of Cheviot and Hedgehope. Martin enjoyed the run and finished in an impressive time of 3.53.25. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Last Sunday saw many Ripon Runners head to Rainton for the ever popular 10K race, part of the Black Sheep series. The course is mostly flat but with an uphill off road finish that can seem to go on forever. Weather conditions were just about ideal being slightly overcast and dry. Ben Imeson completed an impressive run in 37.48 to finish first for the club and fifteenth overall. The other finishers were: Iain Wallace 39.08, Ray Johnstone 41.01, Gary Wilks 41.07, Steve Oates 42.18, Bruce Symonds 43.31, Kevin Jackson 43.52, Chris Brown 44.32, John Ward 45.02, Stuart Wallace 45.49, Chris I’Anson 50.03, Suzanne Rickard 50.59, Mel Dutka 52.23, Helen Pickard 57.03, Michelle Newsome 59.44, Tim Tribe67.49, Doug Tooth 67.53, Monty Munson 79.24.Tuesday night was the last race in the Harrogate District Summer Road Race League hosted by Swaledale Runners at Hudswell. Wilks wows at Edinburgh Sunday 25th May saw a small group of Ripon Runners head north to Edinburgh to take on the challenge of the Edinburgh marathon. The group contained more experienced long distance runners and others undertaking their first marathon. The weather for the 26.2 mile run was ideal to begin with, being overcast and cool but as the miles rolled on and the hard work really began the sun came out to make it tougher on those running. Gary Wilks, who was running to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, put in a superb performance to finish in a time of 3.25.16 beating his last years time by 3 minutes to gain a personal best. The other runners all finished in highly respectable times, they were John Grundy 4.11.53, Richard Chapman 4.16.27, Kate Shaw 4.23.51, Sharon Stoker 4.29.38. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

On Saturday 26th April 9 Ripon runners travelled to Leyburn to take part in the 22 mile off-road Wensleydale Wander. In ideal running conditions the route started in the market square and soon got off onto the footpaths. The runners headed out along Leyburn Shawl and had fine views of Wensleydale and Penhill which would be the only major climb of the day. The 6 Ripon men made their way through the field, and after the climb up onto the side of Penhill started to lift the pace. The route then went across the Middleham gallops and then the race was 'on' because they could see the 2 front runners in the distance. On reaching the last few miles through the lower fields below Leyburn the front runners could be sighted again, so Paul Morgan with the 'bit between his teeth' chased off after the 2 front runners. Paul ran in strongly coming in an impressive close second with the next 4 Ripon runners coming in joint 3rd.Times for the runners were, Paul Morgan-3.27. Ray Raper, Martin Gabriel, Pete Chapman, Ian Wallace 3.31.Peter Wright-3.35. Lynda Wilson, Christine Orr-3.54 Jo Wallace opted for the shorter distance of 12.5 miles completed in 2.12
Sunday 27th April saw a good turn out of Ripon Runners for the Fountains 10K race. The first race in the Black Sheep Series is always popular and was full before the day of the event. The race seemed to go very well despite the 'challenging' conditions. The continued wet weather had turned Skeldale Moor into something resembling a primordial swamp but strangely enough this seemed to make the runners enjoy it even more! Ripon Runners times were Ben Imeson 40.31, Sean McKeag 43.09, Ray Johnstone 43.20, Gary Bastow 43.46, Steve Oates 44.52, Bruce Symonds 45.32, Chris Brown 45.39, John Ward 46.32, Steve Parkinson 49.43, Chris I’Anson 50.25, Mel Dukta 55.45, Anna Ashfield 56.03, Emily Walker 58.08, Fiona Prestwich 59.33, Graham Green 1.03.04, Jill Wass 1.05.39, Tim Tribe 1.06.25 Doug Tooth 1.13.31, Monty Munson 1.28.45 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Ripon Runners take on the London Marathon Challenge
Ripon Runners ventured to London this weekend to take part in the 100th London Marathon. The whole weekend was a great adventure and experience. The weather was unpredictable at times, not knowing if we needed winter, summer or rain clothes, and I ‘m sure there was snow at some point. East Hull Harriers 20 mile race took place on Sunday 9 March, the race was not the only challenge for the 2 Ripon Runners participating in this event, the 1st was to find their way to the start of the race not easy, the 2nd was running the 20 miles in changing weather conditions, the initial 10 miles where perfect light winds and sun, the next 10 were a struggle into the wind all the way home and the sun seemed to vanish. The day was a success with both Ripon Runners achieving sub 3 hour times, Chris Orr 2 hours 48 and Jo Hope 2 hours 53. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
